00:01 - The Importance of Avoiding Commercial Work

12:55 - Uncomfortable but Successful Electricpreneurs

WEBVTT

00:00:01.022 --> 00:00:07.384
Hello, hello, hello and welcome back for another episode of Electric Purnier Secrets, the Electricians podcast.

00:00:07.384 --> 00:00:14.794
It says it right there on the banner Joe, this is episode 222, why we wouldn't get commercial work to fill the season.

00:00:14.794 --> 00:00:32.143
This is important because I know it's shoulder season, the slow season that we all thought would not come in residential services here, and if you're thinking about putting commercial work there or you're thinking about, hey, maybe for an extra strategy, we're going to really break that down and tell you why we wouldn't do it.

00:00:32.143 --> 00:00:37.362
I'm your host, clay Newmire, with me, as always, my esteemed co-host, joseph Lucani.

00:00:37.362 --> 00:00:50.064
We're the Electric Purniers, just a couple of master electricians with business addictions, showing up here with you five days a week to help you master sales, simplify pricing and deliver premium level service.

00:00:50.064 --> 00:00:53.411
Welcome to our daily freemium podcast.

00:00:53.411 --> 00:01:05.792
The admission for your seat here is to sit back, take everything we give, just promise to take action and report your wins back to us either on the Facebook page or on our website, serviceloopelectricalcom.

00:01:05.792 --> 00:01:09.740
Joseph, my brother, how the hell are you this fine Friday, joseph?

00:01:09.921 --> 00:01:19.106
Lucani, you know what I used to look forward to Fridays when I was working other careers and other jobs, because it was close to the weekend and I've loved what we've done.

00:01:19.106 --> 00:01:28.379
So much that and it feels like it inspires me to such an extent that Friday isn't actually something I look forward to anymore, because I'm like you know what.

00:01:28.379 --> 00:01:31.674
I just want to keep doing this again and again, and again and again.

00:01:31.674 --> 00:01:35.412
So I'm feeling incredibly inspired and I'm just grateful that you give back today.

00:01:35.412 --> 00:01:36.218
What about you, brother?

00:01:36.218 --> 00:01:37.040
How are you holding up today?

00:01:38.224 --> 00:01:41.052
Hey man, I was doing great till I just heard that you don't like Fridays.

00:01:41.052 --> 00:01:45.912
I'm thinking about updating the banner below Joseph hates Fridays.

00:01:45.912 --> 00:01:48.058
Get the news flash.

00:01:48.099 --> 00:01:48.459
Here it is.

00:01:48.459 --> 00:01:50.564
Well, I thought that I hate Fridays.

00:01:50.564 --> 00:02:06.790
It's more just that, like you know what I love, what we do, and I feel like the kind of mentality of I'm working for the weekend doesn't really apply to me anymore, because I come in Monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, friday, and I love it and it fills me up with energy and inspires me to do more.

00:02:06.790 --> 00:02:10.504
So it's like why would I look forward to the end of that each week?

00:02:10.504 --> 00:02:10.765
You know?

00:02:11.443 --> 00:02:11.947
Joseph Lucani.

00:02:11.947 --> 00:02:15.865
Yeah, I'm still sleepless thinking about projects and commercial and industrial work anyway.

00:02:15.865 --> 00:02:18.050
So, hey man, why don't we jump right into that?

00:02:18.050 --> 00:02:22.235
I've been on some calls lately, given it's now the winter season.

00:02:22.235 --> 00:02:28.038
Remember, back in September we did a whole week on slow season and people were like it's not real, doesn't exist.

00:02:28.479 --> 00:02:44.681
Well, there's a lot of people feeling it right now, and it's not just the first time I've heard it this week where someone said, well, you know, we plan to fill it with commercial work, or we looked at commercial jobs to fill this space, or we took on commercial work or larger projects to fill this space.

00:02:44.681 --> 00:02:50.223
And I just kind of wanted to end the debate once and for all, really, because it happens in our program too.

00:02:50.223 --> 00:02:56.366
People say, well, I'm trying to stay focused on service, but like, where does the service end and the projects begin?

00:02:56.969 --> 00:03:00.687
And I think there's really a couple pieces that are golden rule to help with that.

00:03:00.687 --> 00:03:02.860
Just to break this out of the gate, if that's all right.

00:03:02.860 --> 00:03:05.766
By all means are they paying your service rate?

00:03:05.766 --> 00:03:12.145
Number one if you know your proper service rate, you've done the math.

00:03:12.145 --> 00:03:16.139
Then you're charging like a service provider, a premium one at that.

00:03:16.139 --> 00:03:20.686
If they're willing to pay your service rate, I'd call it service work.

00:03:20.686 --> 00:03:22.407
Number two.

00:03:22.407 --> 00:03:28.983
Number two was if they're willing to take sorry, give a deposit.

00:03:28.983 --> 00:03:29.412
I don't know why.

00:03:29.412 --> 00:03:30.175
My brain just glitched.

00:03:30.510 --> 00:03:31.193
Are you gonna give your?

00:03:31.233 --> 00:03:32.677
50% deposit up front.

00:03:33.158 --> 00:03:33.360
Mm-hmm.

00:03:33.890 --> 00:03:34.973
And most projects.

00:03:34.973 --> 00:03:43.900
This is kind of where things take a nasty turn, Because a lot of the projects I've been on seems like I've had to bankroll the whole thing, underpaid, the whole way to the finish line.

00:03:43.900 --> 00:03:51.063
Fighting for the last 5%, which turns out to take 30% of the timeline, eats up all of your resources.

00:03:51.063 --> 00:04:04.159
Change management, project management, the whole freaking thing, and then you're left there begging for money with more month at the end of the money than money at the end of the month, thinking, oh well, at least we kept our guys busy for slow season.

00:04:04.961 --> 00:04:05.201
Mm-hmm.

00:04:05.830 --> 00:04:08.919
Now did I just squish the whole podcast by saying it all in a single breath?

00:04:09.610 --> 00:04:20.175
No, because the thing is what you did was you spoke to the reality that a lot of people are experiencing, but we haven't explained how people can get out of it, and that's, I think, where we can really help.

00:04:20.675 --> 00:04:20.937
All right.

00:04:20.937 --> 00:04:23.334
So if the problem's out, we're going to jump right into solution.

00:04:23.334 --> 00:04:23.915
Is that what you're saying?

00:04:24.377 --> 00:04:44.377
Well, pretty much yeah, because we understand the main reason that people take this kind of work on is because they have this fear that service or demand calls won't come in and, as a result, they're preemptively trying to predict the future, saying, well, we're reportedly slow between this month and this month, so if I take a commercial project, I should be good.

00:04:44.377 --> 00:04:50.130
And, yeah, I may not make what I need to make, but I keep the lights on Right there.

00:04:50.130 --> 00:04:52.158
What you're doing is you're playing not to lose.

00:04:52.158 --> 00:04:53.913
You're not playing to win.

00:04:53.913 --> 00:04:56.355
We want to work with winners.

00:04:57.110 --> 00:04:58.115
Cheryl Crowe just called.

00:04:58.115 --> 00:05:00.377
She said the first cut is the deepest, and that was it.

00:05:01.009 --> 00:05:01.593
Well, thank you.

00:05:01.593 --> 00:05:11.139
So the fact is is that when you play to not lose, you're willing to undercut yourself in the very beginning, just so the lights don't go off.

00:05:11.139 --> 00:05:20.000
But when you play to win, you're willing to keep a longer schedule open for the opportunity for the right call for the right customer to come in as well.

00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:23.218
Now, you mentioned we need to have service rate.

00:05:23.218 --> 00:05:24.435
I completely agree.

00:05:24.435 --> 00:05:26.394
You mentioned we need to have a deposit.

00:05:26.394 --> 00:05:27.793
I completely agree.

00:05:27.793 --> 00:05:42.916
And taking that to the next step, it now determines why are people so afraid of that season, and it's because they haven't done the thing we told them in September, which was you need to train for slow season.

00:05:42.916 --> 00:05:51.096
The responses in slow season are price objections they're not time objections, and that's the one thing that people usually stumble the most with.

00:05:51.096 --> 00:06:04.125
But if you knew that you could present a price objection solution because you're a better quality, better reliability, better service you're going to be able to do that Then it wouldn't make a big deal what season of the month it is.

00:06:04.125 --> 00:06:06.742
Now, that's how you're playing to win.

00:06:08.836 --> 00:06:09.699
You just got the goats.

00:06:13.177 --> 00:06:13.699
Thanks brother.

00:06:13.720 --> 00:06:19.982
Matthew, if you're watching us live or in the recording on YouTube or whatever channel you're on, you can now see the goats are up in the banner.

00:06:19.982 --> 00:06:21.125
Joe just got a goat.

00:06:21.125 --> 00:06:23.742
Oh my God, that was deep man.

00:06:23.742 --> 00:06:24.925
Huge, huge, huge.

00:06:24.925 --> 00:06:30.464
I feel like for the first time even I just connected that training for the slow season.

00:06:30.464 --> 00:06:32.067
The whole time was a mindset.

00:06:32.067 --> 00:06:38.247
It wasn't even as much the activities we were doing to create long standing customers.

00:06:38.247 --> 00:06:39.177
I mean, that is it.

00:06:39.177 --> 00:06:40.081
Don't get me wrong.

00:06:40.081 --> 00:07:04.966
But if you don't have the wherewithal, that resilience to stay with it even when you don't have your two weeks booked out and to keep running the play and take our service leads now list and run that action checklist and keep voting leads on the calendar day by day by day to get through that season, if you don't have that wherewithal, you're kind of up shit creek without a paddle, are you?

00:07:05.795 --> 00:07:11.247
And it's pretty unfortunate because the thing is that every day you go without something on the board.

00:07:11.247 --> 00:07:24.036
Yeah, you lose money, but you lose mental equity and confidence, which costs you more money than you not taking that call that day, Because you never know where the demand call lotto is going to come in Like.

00:07:24.036 --> 00:07:27.985
One specific example that came up was remember yesterday we were talking about ballparking.

00:07:27.985 --> 00:07:34.415
I had a customer called me asking for what would it cost to have a couple outlets change my bed and breakfast.

00:07:34.415 --> 00:07:41.454
We went there, we ran the play and it was in the cold months of the year and we ended up doing multiple Tesla chargers.

00:07:41.454 --> 00:07:46.454
We ended up doing multiple panel changes, we ended up doing the full redevice of an 8,000 square foot facility.

00:07:46.454 --> 00:07:54.117
But we would have not have known, and because of that we had weeks worth of work through the winter All from one.

00:07:54.117 --> 00:07:56.221
What does it cost to change an outlet call?

00:07:56.221 --> 00:07:59.269
You never know which one's going to blow up on you.

00:07:59.269 --> 00:08:01.242
So the fact is good.

00:08:01.915 --> 00:08:03.658
I was just going to say 8,000 square feet.

00:08:03.658 --> 00:08:06.223
I mean, that sounds like we're back to this original question.

00:08:06.223 --> 00:08:08.226
That's almost a project Almost.

00:08:08.226 --> 00:08:09.408
Did you get your service rate?

00:08:09.408 --> 00:08:10.471
Oh yeah.

00:08:10.471 --> 00:08:11.853
Did you get your deposit?

00:08:11.853 --> 00:08:18.267
Oh yeah, so it was in front, essentially, and you were room for the winter, working inside for the most part.

00:08:18.696 --> 00:08:19.940
It was the best part about it, yeah.

00:08:19.940 --> 00:08:22.862
So we ended up having I remember there was multiple panels inside.

00:08:22.862 --> 00:08:23.904
It was an old bed and breakfast.

00:08:23.904 --> 00:08:25.699
It was an awesome place.

00:08:25.699 --> 00:08:44.749
It was one of these old historic buildings and the benefit was is that, yeah, you're right, we were inside, but we were also directly impacting someone during their slow season Because they were like these are the best months to do this because we have less foot traffic, because people like coming to this area for the foliage and it's already gone now at this point.

00:08:44.749 --> 00:08:51.386
So it benefited them to take on the larger projects when we would have said it wouldn't have.

00:08:52.716 --> 00:09:05.485
So, just by running the play, presenting options on every call, you go to having the resilience to say I'm not going to quit on this because I believe in what it can do, not just for me, but for every life that it touches and impacts.

00:09:05.485 --> 00:09:08.980
Remember you throw a stone in the water.

00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:11.505
The waves and ripples go far beyond what you can see.

00:09:11.505 --> 00:09:17.346
You can improve one life, one home, and we don't know what it's going to lead to.

00:09:17.346 --> 00:09:26.342
That one outlet change could be the next referral that leads you to your biggest sale ever, and if you were on a commercial project to fill in that slow season.

00:09:26.342 --> 00:09:29.048
You're just surrounded by more commercial project guys.

00:09:29.048 --> 00:09:36.669
At the worst scenario, someone will call you for their own personal home and because they've seen you work, they expect you to do it for a lesser rate.

00:09:38.355 --> 00:09:39.639
Huge, huge man.

00:09:39.639 --> 00:09:44.808
This is huge and I'm having a mind shift because, again, we don't plan these conversations, we just have them.

00:09:44.808 --> 00:09:47.695
We know there's a topic that we're moved by in the morning and we just get it going.

00:09:47.695 --> 00:09:51.941
But I've got like this 30,000 foot view All of a sudden.

00:09:51.941 --> 00:10:02.600
I'm seeing like our whole this season, from fall to winter, kind of summed up really in like four R words man, resilience, run.

00:10:02.681 --> 00:10:06.347
The play, which I recognize is three words, but that's what it's one of them right.

00:10:06.347 --> 00:10:10.518
Rinse as an end of the day, like the 75 E hard.

00:10:10.518 --> 00:10:24.590
Really get clear of your mind and your space to be with your family and then repeat and do it again, and do it again, and do it again and watch what happens.

00:10:24.590 --> 00:10:29.080
When you become that consistent it's close to a fifth or a robot as possible.

00:10:29.080 --> 00:10:32.106
It's no wonder we called you the sales bot for a little while, joe.

00:10:32.106 --> 00:10:47.695
Obviously we're not trying to breed robots, but if that's the human condition, the human weakness really, that we all have in common, is our ability to take consistent action, doesn't this all make sense?

00:10:48.917 --> 00:10:51.500
It really, really does and it's going to have huge impacts.

00:10:51.500 --> 00:10:53.422
I like the four Rs, man.

00:10:53.422 --> 00:10:55.465
We are going to start using that.

00:10:55.465 --> 00:11:00.431
That was an on the fly great assumption, but we're now going to be using that because that's a solid acronym.

00:11:01.135 --> 00:11:05.386
That's it, man, right, I think I got to do it one more time to reinforce it.

00:11:05.774 --> 00:11:06.798
The four Rs are solid.

00:11:08.676 --> 00:11:14.964
Right, resilience, running the play, rinsing, end of day, you got to clean it off.

00:11:14.964 --> 00:11:18.187
Right, you got to wash this all the way, because there's hard days, there's good days.

00:11:18.187 --> 00:11:19.769
Either way, they'll affect tomorrow.

00:11:19.769 --> 00:11:25.044
Repeat that's massive, massive, massive Joe.

00:11:25.044 --> 00:11:28.354
Let's wrap this up with a couple of action items and get out of here for the Friday.

00:11:28.354 --> 00:11:28.695
What do you say?

00:11:28.695 --> 00:11:29.898
I'm down with it.

00:11:29.898 --> 00:11:31.001
You want a basic or all-star?

00:11:31.643 --> 00:11:32.325
I could take either one.

00:11:32.875 --> 00:11:36.296
You take basic I'll do something big today All right sweet.

00:11:36.777 --> 00:11:45.970
So when you think about this basic option, we've all established that we're trying to take this commercial work because we don't want to lose right.

00:11:45.970 --> 00:11:54.648
And the very, very minimum is I want you to know that if someone were to give you $100 for $1,000, would you take it?

00:11:54.648 --> 00:12:01.368
Obviously, you would see that this is a losing agreement, but you still have $100 at the end of the day.

00:12:01.368 --> 00:12:04.381
That's what a lot of people say when they take these projects.

00:12:04.381 --> 00:12:06.245
Well, at least I got something compared to nothing.

00:12:06.245 --> 00:12:11.645
The goal is is don't you think at the bare minimum, you're worth what you're asking for?

00:12:11.645 --> 00:12:15.200
Does your worth change in the season?

00:12:15.200 --> 00:12:19.807
Then why would you ask for less when you need it most?

00:12:19.807 --> 00:12:22.500
That's my basic action.

00:12:22.500 --> 00:12:23.864
It's just a question to leave with you.

00:12:25.176 --> 00:12:25.437
Okay.

00:12:25.437 --> 00:12:29.466
Well, my all-star is going to be a heavy contemplation for the weekend.

00:12:29.466 --> 00:12:41.764
I'm going to quote right behind us here, as I'm looking at the camera, I'm also looking at a Voltaire quote uncertainty is an uncomfortable position, but certainty is an absurd one.

00:12:41.764 --> 00:12:46.961
Let that sink in for a moment, guys.

00:12:46.961 --> 00:12:54.032
That's why we're starting with resilience Run the play, rinse and repeat.

00:12:54.032 --> 00:12:54.695
Do it again tomorrow.

00:12:55.437 --> 00:12:58.711
I know it's uncomfortable not having your calendar all figured out.

00:12:58.711 --> 00:12:59.695
It's not always two weeks out.

00:12:59.695 --> 00:13:02.730
It's not always two months out for some of you people.

00:13:02.730 --> 00:13:18.695
When you start to get uncomfortable, right For some of us rather not you people, I apologize Get comfortable doing the uncomfortable and really often that uncomfortable bit is just sticking to us, sticking to our trajectory, while the world tries to pull us out to do it their way.

00:13:18.695 --> 00:13:21.047
You don't have to do that.

00:13:21.047 --> 00:13:22.111
You're different.

00:13:22.111 --> 00:13:22.674
You're an electricpreneur.

00:13:22.674 --> 00:13:27.695
Guys, this has been another episode of Electricpreneur's Secrets, the Electricians podcast.

00:13:27.695 --> 00:13:30.187
We're here with you five days a week.

00:13:30.187 --> 00:13:36.695
Tomorrow we're taking two off right To help you master sales, simplify pricing and deliver premium-level electrical service.

00:13:36.695 --> 00:13:46.695

00:13:46.695 --> 00:13:48.658
