00:00:01.002 --> 00:00:08.426
Hello, hello, hello and welcome back to yet another episode of Electricpreneur's Secrets, the Electricians podcast.
00:00:08.426 --> 00:00:11.368
This is episode 221.
00:00:11.368 --> 00:00:12.904
You don't want to go anywhere?
00:00:12.904 --> 00:00:16.890
Please fasten your seatbelts because I'm asking you a favor.
00:00:16.890 --> 00:00:21.469
Today, me and Joe are actually please do not qualify with price.
00:00:21.469 --> 00:00:24.227
Some of you already know what we're talking about here.
00:00:24.227 --> 00:00:25.803
I'm your host, clay Neumeier.
00:00:25.803 --> 00:00:31.025
With me is always my esteem host, co-host, rather not a Joseph Lucani.
00:00:31.025 --> 00:00:37.908
We're the Electricpreneurs, just a couple of master electricians with business addictions here and ready to serve at the highest level.
00:00:37.908 --> 00:00:38.389
Of course.
00:00:38.389 --> 00:00:51.728
We've been showing up five days a week all of this year 2023 to help you master sales, simplify pricing and deliver premium level electrical service, and this is our freemium coach program.
00:00:51.728 --> 00:00:59.009
All you got to do is sit back, take everything we give, which promise you'll also take action and report the winds back to us.
00:00:59.009 --> 00:01:03.667
Woo, joseph, how you doing today, brother man, I am feeling great.
00:01:03.859 --> 00:01:11.683
We had an absolute fire offer class this morning and literally if anyone who's watched me or heard the podcast when you know I'm rubbing my hands together, you know I'm excited.
00:01:11.683 --> 00:01:15.602
It felt like a praying mantis All class.
00:01:15.602 --> 00:01:16.564
I was just doing this.
00:01:17.579 --> 00:01:17.801
It was.
00:01:18.182 --> 00:01:19.245
I'm feeling inspired.
00:01:19.245 --> 00:01:19.727
And blessed.
00:01:20.280 --> 00:01:24.807
Is that what praying mantises do I think of like a?
00:01:24.846 --> 00:01:29.939
grasshopper I think of like a grasshopper or a praying mantis rubbing their hands together, constantly Making music right.
00:01:29.939 --> 00:01:35.549
Yep, yep, I know, but it's just one of those things where, hey, I'm just letting the autism run rampant.
00:01:35.549 --> 00:01:36.150
What are you going to do?
00:01:36.921 --> 00:01:38.826
Yeah, by the way, that was my best cricket noise.
00:01:39.560 --> 00:01:40.543
Well, it checks out, don't worry.
00:01:41.941 --> 00:01:43.466
Yeah, man, I'm doing good too.
00:01:43.466 --> 00:01:44.349
Thanks for asking.
00:01:44.349 --> 00:01:49.424
Oh, forgive me, Today, pretty important one.
00:01:49.424 --> 00:01:51.167
I hear this time and time again.
00:01:51.167 --> 00:01:57.453
Joe, have you ever heard of someone throwing ballpark pricing over the phone to kind of test the waters?
00:01:57.453 --> 00:02:00.844
Dip a toe, if you will see if this person's actually ready to pay.
00:02:00.844 --> 00:02:02.680
Yeah, First off.
00:02:02.680 --> 00:02:04.004
Actually, that brings up a good question.
00:02:04.004 --> 00:02:05.069
Why would they be ready to pay?
00:02:05.069 --> 00:02:08.509
They just found out about you or just called you for the first?
00:02:08.509 --> 00:02:10.104
I'll let you dive into this.
00:02:10.163 --> 00:02:14.348
brother Help us, help us, please help us with qualifying with price over the phone.
00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:23.090
So I'm going to admit something terrible is that the reason why I'm able to speak to this from such experience is because I've actually been that guy before.
00:02:23.090 --> 00:02:31.411
There was a lot of times when I used to qualify over the phone and it would blow up in my face and I never quite knew why until I started doing the inverse of it.
00:02:31.411 --> 00:02:39.707
So let's first talk about why it happens and why we're so tempted to do it, and then actually why it's such a detriment to your process.
00:02:41.082 --> 00:02:42.266
Let's dive right in, brother.
00:02:43.240 --> 00:02:46.468
So the first thing that happens is why are we doing this?
00:02:46.468 --> 00:02:56.408
A lot of times, when you feel like I don't want to waste my time, you start trying to guard your time, which I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to consider.
00:02:56.408 --> 00:03:00.468
But why would you go into a customer's home and be a waste of time?
00:03:00.468 --> 00:03:01.865
Isn't that what you signed up for?
00:03:01.865 --> 00:03:07.012
Isn't that what your goal is to get from someone who calls me to be getting out there and offering them an option?
00:03:07.659 --> 00:03:11.090
Well, it'd be a waste of time if they're not ready to buy with me and now.
00:03:11.090 --> 00:03:12.241
I'm going to go there and what?
00:03:12.241 --> 00:03:13.985
Just to hear a price objection?
00:03:13.985 --> 00:03:15.188
I don't think so.
00:03:15.188 --> 00:03:17.283
It's true, it's just tire kicking.
00:03:18.201 --> 00:03:18.784
It's possible.
00:03:18.784 --> 00:03:41.764
Now the thing is is that just that thought process alone could set us up for failure, because there have been calls that I've gone into which were just absolute dumpster fires of a call but ended up turning into real serious, top tier options, and the reason being is that we were there and present and willing to make an offer after we've shown the value.
00:03:41.764 --> 00:03:43.824
That's the tipping point.
00:03:43.824 --> 00:03:53.429
When you qualify in advance with a price, what you're saying is to receive any level of service from me because they don't know that you're different from someone else.
00:03:53.429 --> 00:03:55.262
They just know.
00:03:55.802 --> 00:04:00.282
Well, if I work with service of electrical, it costs this much to get them just to come out.
00:04:00.282 --> 00:04:05.710
If I go with Chuck in the truck, he doesn't actually charge you, just free estimates.
00:04:05.710 --> 00:04:12.210
Yeah, you know what I'm going to go with Chuck and maybe they don't like his service, but it's free, so they can't really complain.
00:04:12.210 --> 00:04:15.287
But they would have never experienced your service.
00:04:15.287 --> 00:04:17.326
And as a result, you're saying you know what?
00:04:17.326 --> 00:04:18.649
They were too cheap.
00:04:18.649 --> 00:04:20.798
Yeah, I'm good, I didn't go to that call.
00:04:20.798 --> 00:04:22.163
I would have wasted my time.
00:04:22.163 --> 00:04:23.567
They didn't want to pay $150.
00:04:25.076 --> 00:04:34.470
And I think now there's an important distinguishment here, because we ourselves encourage a diagnostics fee for a demand call specifically.
00:04:34.470 --> 00:04:37.720
But that's a different lever in a different situation.
00:04:37.720 --> 00:04:49.827
What we're speaking to specifically here is ballparking, the actual install or repair price in order to see if they would be willing to pay you that after this short time on the phone together.
00:04:50.375 --> 00:04:54.406
That's true, and I'm glad we're clarifying that any further, because my brain goes in all different directions.
00:04:55.096 --> 00:04:57.480
But there's actually a story though, if I can too.
00:04:57.800 --> 00:04:58.341
Sure, by all means.
00:04:58.362 --> 00:05:00.646
I think this story really applies to what you just said.
00:05:00.646 --> 00:05:16.968
One of our clients, edwin and we may have even said this one a time or two before gets a demand call and for his fee I think he's even under $100 for just the diagnostic trip fee Just to get us out there $89, let's say.
00:05:16.968 --> 00:05:22.244
But this specific call was for a receptacle deficient in the master bedroom.
00:05:22.244 --> 00:05:24.187
It's not working, whatever's going on right.
00:05:24.187 --> 00:05:28.983
And what I love about this story is how Edwin ran the play.
00:05:28.983 --> 00:05:30.987
So here's what happens.
00:05:30.987 --> 00:05:40.870
He could have, over the phone, said oh yeah, no, this fix ends up being our bottom option, which is likely going to be around $350 for you.
00:05:40.870 --> 00:05:48.858
And the guy on the phone may have then said yeah, don't bother coming out, I'm going to call someone else Because that's pretty steep to go from.
00:05:48.858 --> 00:05:49.620
Just met you.
00:05:49.620 --> 00:05:51.142
Hey, this receptacle doesn't work.
00:05:51.142 --> 00:05:53.968
Maybe this is a 10 minute fix you could come have a look at.
00:05:54.675 --> 00:06:00.223
But what happened instead is Edwin ran the play, says no, for $89 will come out, have a look.
00:06:00.223 --> 00:06:01.704
Reassess that.
00:06:01.704 --> 00:06:04.389
$89 is going to roll up into any solution that you take.
00:06:04.389 --> 00:06:06.357
Sounds fair.
00:06:06.357 --> 00:06:09.303
They go out there, run the play on the way to this house.
00:06:09.303 --> 00:06:14.896
His apprentice says Edwin, I don't know about this area man, I don't know this guy.
00:06:14.896 --> 00:06:16.319
This seems like a waste of money.
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:17.523
This is a waste of time.
00:06:17.523 --> 00:06:19.867
Rather, this is a tire kicker.
00:06:19.867 --> 00:06:21.697
Right, this guy's not going to spend.
00:06:21.697 --> 00:06:28.668
And about two hours to two and a quarter later, they're walking out with a platinum $18,000 sale.
00:06:28.668 --> 00:06:31.757
What are the chances?
00:06:31.757 --> 00:06:41.129
Qualifying with the price over the phone even a ballpark might have scared that person away, even if they later became the platinum buyer.
00:06:41.975 --> 00:06:50.009
I would have been extremely high because, if you think about it, that person, just as you mentioned, is not likely going to see the value in working with you.
00:06:50.009 --> 00:06:55.002
Because from electrician to electrician, yeah you know what a service rate of 350, that makes sense.
00:06:55.002 --> 00:06:56.386
We've all run businesses.
00:06:56.386 --> 00:07:06.687
We know things have to charge with the charge, but most homeowners still think we're charging 1960s prices and that everyone should be $100 an hour and if this is only 10 minutes it should be under 50 bucks.
00:07:06.687 --> 00:07:10.519
That's their mind and you can't blame them for thinking that.
00:07:10.519 --> 00:07:14.166
Until they've seen the value, until they've seen why you're more.
00:07:15.055 --> 00:07:17.319
So a lot of times we would get that with generators.
00:07:17.319 --> 00:07:20.064
A customer would call and say, hey, how much does it cost?
00:07:20.064 --> 00:07:25.644
I got a 24kw generator, I'm looking to have installed meters right there, gas right there, what's a ballpark?
00:07:25.644 --> 00:07:28.458
And when people would give you the ballpark.
00:07:28.458 --> 00:07:30.581
There's really only a couple options.
00:07:30.581 --> 00:07:46.668
You either have to guess low to not scare them and get your foot in the door, but then face the price objection when you actually have to charge them the real price, or you have to guess high and as a result, you have to say I'm going to cover my butt so that you're not scared, but you're likely going to scare them.
00:07:47.834 --> 00:08:11.365
So that's why what we advocate for is the middle road, which is what we're going to do is let's just first get to the call, let's build the value, let's establish the trust, the respect and the mutual appreciation, design a range of choices from the finest you can buy to the most bare minimum you can do, and then, from there, let the customer choose, and you'll likely find that they're not going to take the option you would have thought they would have taken.
00:08:11.365 --> 00:08:14.380
People in mega mansions could take your bottom option.
00:08:14.380 --> 00:08:17.088
People in a trailer park community could take your top.
00:08:17.088 --> 00:08:18.572
It's happened both ways.
00:08:20.476 --> 00:08:21.860
I love the choice aspect.
00:08:21.860 --> 00:08:40.644
I mean, I'm biased, obviously, but even yesterday on the call and sometimes sometimes I've found like it's when someone brings a partner on for the first time and they don't quite know us or what we're doing, right, they don't quite understand, they haven't heard us talk about it before, so they might come on to a call and go six options.
00:08:40.644 --> 00:08:41.347
Are you serious?
00:08:41.347 --> 00:08:43.758
What kind of salesman are you?
00:08:43.758 --> 00:08:52.735
But in the way that this is positioned, Joe, I've never felt better I could speak from the bottom of my heart that we are truly here to serve.
00:08:52.735 --> 00:09:11.158
And one of the favorite things that I've absolutely actually learned from you in our time together and been able to propagate and loving it, is this idea that, hey, if we're not the perfect choice for you, if this isn't the right fit, I will literally throw our proposal in the garbage and spend another five, ten, fifteen minutes here.
00:09:11.158 --> 00:09:11.779
I've got nothing.
00:09:11.779 --> 00:09:15.480
I mean, I'm meant to be here anyway and I will help you choose the right fit.
00:09:15.480 --> 00:09:18.188
How would you like to proceed?
00:09:19.613 --> 00:09:30.846
I love that in a moment, because at that point what you've done is you've proven to be so significantly different than your competitor because if you imagine the typical contractor comes in, you say, hey, you're too much.
00:09:30.846 --> 00:09:33.197
What are the odds that person to be like?
00:09:33.197 --> 00:09:33.618
You know what.
00:09:33.618 --> 00:09:36.657
I'm okay with that, but I want to serve you regardless.
00:09:36.657 --> 00:09:40.535
So even if you don't go with me, I want to see you and your family taken care of.
00:09:40.535 --> 00:09:49.255
I honestly would pause and be like, well, I might actually look at your proposal again because that's from the heart, that's an intense statement to make.
00:09:49.255 --> 00:09:51.666
You got to really care for that to happen.
00:09:52.106 --> 00:09:54.014
And even if not, guess what?
00:09:54.014 --> 00:10:06.916
After I hook you up with someone else, I'll still care and follow up, if you don't mind, to make sure everything went okay, and if it didn't, I'll still be here because I'll still consider you a friend and someone that I would love to work with.
00:10:07.818 --> 00:10:08.379
I love that.
00:10:08.379 --> 00:10:09.985
I absolutely love that.
00:10:11.076 --> 00:10:12.299
Where's the salesmanship?
00:10:12.299 --> 00:10:19.182
We're absolutely shooting from the heart, and I couldn't be happier with that, man.
00:10:19.182 --> 00:10:21.687
Okay, so qualifying with price.
00:10:21.687 --> 00:10:23.116
Back to the bigger topic here.
00:10:23.116 --> 00:10:53.649
What we're really saying ultimately is that and I mean through this action, I'm just 30,000 feet up here again, Joe and you may have to reel me back down, but when we qualify over the phone with a ballpark price, we're actually saying that we're not confident in our process and our ability to go and create a lasting friendship, a relationship at this home and a lasting impact that would cause further touchpoints down the road.
00:10:54.572 --> 00:10:55.335
That's 100% accurate.
00:10:55.856 --> 00:11:00.192
If I went to any business owner and I said well, here's the deal.
00:11:00.192 --> 00:11:04.288
This is like a multiple choice really, but we're going to have a few outcomes.
00:11:04.288 --> 00:11:15.823
We can scare them away over the phone, or we can go there and, either way, create a situation where there will be follow-up and alternate sales opportunities, or you'll get a client.
00:11:15.823 --> 00:11:19.924
Two out of three wins which would you choose?
00:11:19.924 --> 00:11:23.684
I mean, it seems like a no-brainer from that standpoint.
00:11:23.684 --> 00:11:32.303
It's just this fear of wasting time that we seem to have and that fear of our ability to be able to create that lasting impact.
00:11:32.303 --> 00:11:33.337
Then I mean, what else could it be?
00:11:33.337 --> 00:11:34.341
Go ahead, brother.
00:11:35.035 --> 00:11:46.105
Well, I want to also explain it from the inverse, because I'm sure there's someone listening to this that's still feeling like I'm not going to do it for free, and I want to explain that you're already doing it for free.
00:11:46.105 --> 00:11:47.019
Let me explain how.
00:11:47.019 --> 00:11:48.777
You go to a call.
00:11:48.777 --> 00:11:53.861
You've qualified, you tried saying that hey, I'm going to be a ballpark, and they actually let you show up.
00:11:53.861 --> 00:11:56.783
Let's assume they actually let you show up.
00:11:56.783 --> 00:12:01.677
They've got an expectation of a price in their mind and they let you come and you finally show up.
00:12:03.335 --> 00:12:11.863
You've boxed yourself really hard into only being in a certain price point, because anything more than that approaches a bait and switch.
00:12:11.863 --> 00:12:15.482
Getting less than that seems like you're trying to undersell it.
00:12:15.482 --> 00:12:22.245
So when the customer eventually does ask you to email it over, you've already put the price in there.
00:12:22.245 --> 00:12:23.548
They already know what it is.
00:12:23.548 --> 00:12:25.822
They already have full control before you even ran the play.
00:12:25.822 --> 00:12:27.659
They know the end result.
00:12:27.659 --> 00:12:35.024
They have the bag of goodies, which means your ability of pivoting and taking control of this call back is diminished significantly.
00:12:35.855 --> 00:12:41.659
So when they do ask you to email it over, you have less grounding to say no because you're not following a process.
00:12:41.659 --> 00:12:44.041
Or when they ask you to say you know what?
00:12:44.041 --> 00:12:45.100
I want to break this down.
00:12:45.100 --> 00:12:47.541
You've already sunk the cost of being there.
00:12:47.541 --> 00:12:54.139
But if you can control the call from the beginning, allow them to see that you're so and they trust, like in respect.
00:12:54.139 --> 00:12:57.309
See that the value gets built in the relationship.
00:12:57.309 --> 00:13:11.745
Now you get to control whether you give them a price or not and because you haven't given them a ballpark, you still have the scarcity and the authority to make a decision 100% men, and the benefit, of course, is massive, massive growth.
00:13:12.025 --> 00:13:14.460
With this shift in mindset, you will change your business.
00:13:14.460 --> 00:13:34.083
I've got a quote on the board, because what happens is thank you for the pause what happens is, at this point on the phone, you just don't have rapport and you need rapport to increase, improve their model of the world.
00:13:34.083 --> 00:13:40.679
I love that word, but it comes from the relationship and that's really what we're trying to do.
00:13:40.679 --> 00:14:04.783
Right, if we can wrap our minds around the fact that every single person has a unique model of the world, we're trying to gain sufficient access to their model through trust to just influence that, to be a bit brighter than it was yesterday, and you can see that through a proper process, and that again will change the game for you.
00:14:04.783 --> 00:14:07.102
Joe, we've got to wrap this up here pretty quick.
00:14:07.102 --> 00:14:09.422
So what do you think for a couple of action items today?
00:14:09.422 --> 00:14:11.077
On this one, I got one.
00:14:11.894 --> 00:14:19.903
So at the most bare minimum level, we're going to tell you don't ballpark over the phone, Like right, obviously that's like established, Don't give the ballpark.
00:14:19.903 --> 00:14:22.078
But I want to say the minimum before.
00:14:22.078 --> 00:14:39.923
That is to just understand the why is to say like if you ballpark someone, there's only two outcomes to it You've either paid for a lead that you cannot move forward with, or you have someone who you paid to get access to and you're going to try to have a conversation.
00:14:39.923 --> 00:14:47.799
If you're not willing to at least entertain a conversation with someone, there is no chance you'll have the opportunity to build a report.
00:14:47.799 --> 00:14:52.042
So don't build ballparks, because ballparks kill your relationships.
00:14:54.547 --> 00:14:55.168
That's I'm trying.
00:14:55.168 --> 00:15:06.780
I'm thinking to literally, when you say that like don't build a ballpark, don't build, don't build a ballpark, anything else there to add, joe, no, I mean, I could go for an all star if you don't want to.
00:15:06.780 --> 00:15:08.885
Go ahead, man Okay.
00:15:08.946 --> 00:15:09.947
All right.
00:15:09.947 --> 00:15:11.537
So continuously with this.
00:15:11.537 --> 00:15:20.182
What we're going to say is it's better to also have a preparation for when someone asks for it, because it's one thing to say I won't do it.
00:15:20.182 --> 00:15:24.184
It's another thing to have a prepared response for when someone does ask.
00:15:24.184 --> 00:15:27.562
As I mentioned Clay, if I were to say, hey, can you give me a ballpark?
00:15:27.562 --> 00:15:36.389
Well, not every job's the same and because of that we can't quite really give you a ballpark, but we could come on out.
00:15:36.389 --> 00:15:38.095
Are you going to trust me?
00:15:38.095 --> 00:15:39.639
Does that sound like a confident response?
00:15:39.639 --> 00:15:41.677
No, of course not.
00:15:41.677 --> 00:15:43.841
So have a response prepared.
00:15:44.375 --> 00:15:48.736
Whatever you want to use, it's fine with me, but it should communicate a couple of basic points.
00:15:48.736 --> 00:15:51.500
Just saying I'd be happy to help you.
00:15:51.500 --> 00:16:00.924
You to reframe it by saying in order here at Service Oblactical, what we do is we design a range of choices from the finest money combined and the most bearable ones you can do.
00:16:00.924 --> 00:16:02.941

00:16:02.941 --> 00:16:08.340
All we need to do is schedule a time to come out to your home and we'd be happy to be of service by providing you that menu.
00:16:08.340 --> 00:16:12.575
When would be the best time we can come and serve you?
00:16:12.575 --> 00:16:14.985
And now all you have the option is I'm going to move forward or not.
00:16:16.493 --> 00:16:17.134
Absolutely, man.
00:16:17.134 --> 00:16:41.011
I love that all-star action and I really want to highlight guys, double underline, highlight, italicize, couple exclamation marks on it the voice inflections that you just heard, like, if you can right now grab your mobile device that you're probably listening through, and like rewind 20 seconds and listen to that again, because that was off the cuff, but the voice inflections were still there to show belief and a smile.
00:16:41.011 --> 00:16:44.359
Someone who's happy to actually wants to come and serve us.
00:16:44.359 --> 00:16:45.782
That matters.
00:16:45.782 --> 00:16:50.539
It's a huge piece of this, as this has been another episode of Electric Pernurse Secrets.
