Ep 218 - Create an Option-friendly Mindset

Ep  218 - Create an Option-friendly Mindset

Ever wondered why some technicians hesitate to provide options to clients? In this enlightening conversation, we, your hosts Clay and Joseph, demystify this common misconception and highlight the power of cultivating an option-friendly mindset. We discuss the potential pitfalls of appearing too pushy and how shifting your focus to serve can enhance customer satisfaction and foster business growth.

Hence, we urge you to rethink what a post-job scenario might look like for your customers. Additionally, we share the importance of fostering a learning environment and how it has led to success in our own clients' stories. 00:00:15.990 --> 00:00:21.070
I'm your host, clay Neumeyer with me as always, co-host Joseph Lucanian.

00:00:21.070 --> 00:00:26.871
We're the Electricpreneurs Just a couple of master electricians with business addictions, here and ready to serve.

00:00:26.871 --> 00:00:38.728
So welcome to your freemium program, your daily coach call and the investment for you here is just a little bit of time, so sit back in the hot seat, join us and have a big take away, a big breakthrough for your week.

00:00:38.728 --> 00:00:39.890
Joe, how are you doing today, brother?

00:00:40.371 --> 00:00:41.134
I'm doing good man.

00:00:41.134 --> 00:00:42.719
I'm feeling really blessed today.

00:00:42.719 --> 00:00:44.006
It's a really really solid day.

00:00:44.006 --> 00:00:45.304
We had a great day in class.

00:00:45.304 --> 00:00:48.145
I'm loving what we do, so I'm in the right mindset.

00:00:48.164 --> 00:00:48.545
What about you?

00:00:48.545 --> 00:00:49.607
Awesome man?

00:00:49.607 --> 00:00:52.304
Yeah, living the dream, had an awesome weekend.

00:00:52.304 --> 00:00:58.329
I took an extended weekend, as you know three days and we went right to the West Coast, got some ocean.

00:00:58.329 --> 00:01:01.826
So my mindset is actually pretty peppy right now.

00:01:01.826 --> 00:01:04.111
I'm fired up, I'm ready to go Love it.

00:01:04.111 --> 00:01:06.525
Where does this problem come in, man?

00:01:06.525 --> 00:01:08.579
Create an option-friendly mindset.

00:01:08.579 --> 00:01:14.745
I mean, I'm kind of recollecting all the calls I've been on where people say, well, how do you create options for this?

00:01:16.040 --> 00:01:16.561
It's just a.

00:01:16.662 --> 00:01:19.790
GFCI, or it's just a receptacle or other.

00:01:20.700 --> 00:01:32.552
So it's actually a step before that thought even happens, because I've realized that what we've done not we personally, but we as technicians is we create things known as self-fulfilling prophecies.

00:01:32.552 --> 00:01:33.983
Let me explain what I mean by that.

00:01:33.983 --> 00:01:43.843
Let's say you're start off and you're saying I don't know how to offer options because I'm worried that I'm going to sound like I'm pushing something on this customer or I'm offering something that they don't need.

00:01:43.843 --> 00:01:51.391
You'll naturally have that belief and whatever words we teach you after that.

00:01:51.391 --> 00:02:02.870
If you have that mindset to start with, somehow it becomes communicated to the client, whether it's to your body language or your tonality or your posture or anything.

00:02:02.870 --> 00:02:14.144
As a result, the client notices, becomes a little more skeptical as a result, ask you why you want to know these things or why it is you're trying to offer these choices.

00:02:14.144 --> 00:02:22.173
As a result, you then feel that the client has opposition to you and that options were the cause of it.

00:02:22.881 --> 00:02:25.649
I was just going to say you give me that dirty chicken skin when you say that.

00:02:26.439 --> 00:02:29.545
Exactly right, Because that's the whole start of it.

00:02:29.545 --> 00:02:37.227
If you yourself feel like you're trying to push something on your client, then naturally it's going to come across in your language.

00:02:37.227 --> 00:02:39.278
That's what you're trying to do.

00:02:39.278 --> 00:02:53.945
But if you shift the mindset to how can I serve this client in a way that, when they hire my company, they'll have the option of doing everything or nothing, depending on what they're willing to spend, Is it wrong of us to want to offer that solution to someone?

00:02:54.608 --> 00:02:55.250
Not at all, man.

00:02:55.250 --> 00:02:57.741
My Facebook post was about this Did you read this?

00:02:57.741 --> 00:02:59.268
Come up with a topic and then pitch it.

00:03:00.902 --> 00:03:12.092
No, it actually came today in class believe it or not where someone came to said well, we have a situation where we need to move a single pendant six inches to the right, all it is.

00:03:12.092 --> 00:03:15.325
The funny thing was they kept saying that's all it is.

00:03:15.325 --> 00:03:16.588
That's all it is.

00:03:16.588 --> 00:03:17.532
That's all it is.

00:03:17.532 --> 00:03:21.681
It took us about four and a half minutes to come up with another five options on top of that.

00:03:24.180 --> 00:03:31.930
By the way, that's no offense meant to them or anyone else, it's absolutely just a mindset shift 100%.

00:03:31.930 --> 00:03:34.847
Maybe on a Monday morning that's the hardest time to have it.

00:03:36.199 --> 00:03:37.283
There's no judgment whatsoever.

00:03:37.283 --> 00:03:45.282
Of course it's the thought of trying to say, well, are we focused on the technical or are we focused on the service?

00:03:45.282 --> 00:03:50.706
Let's say you take that six inches fixture, You've got to just move it over a couple inches.

00:03:50.706 --> 00:03:56.844
I can imagine someone saying, well, it's only that the customer only wants that.

00:03:56.844 --> 00:04:00.448
Do you mind if I touch on a couple of things that could take it further than that.

00:04:02.300 --> 00:04:03.727
I just want to throw one thing in there.

00:04:03.727 --> 00:04:06.008
There's also this limiting belief.

00:04:06.008 --> 00:04:09.310
I could hear echoes of electricians saying I don't even want that call.

00:04:09.310 --> 00:04:12.724
Oh great, another minimum call out fee.

00:04:12.724 --> 00:04:19.632
That's a huge, huge limiting belief here, in an assumption that there's nothing else.

00:04:19.632 --> 00:04:21.305
But please, man, jump back on it.

00:04:22.379 --> 00:04:24.651
To take it in the most basic level.

00:04:24.651 --> 00:04:29.348
A lot of times, when you're struggling with building options, the best thing to do is start from the bottom up.

00:04:29.348 --> 00:04:49.250
If everyone can agree, from a logical standpoint which is where most technicians live that this is what the customer called me for, then the best way to go above that is to say how does this either directly relate to the thing they called for or how does the thing that I'm offering significantly impact their life for the better?

00:04:49.250 --> 00:04:59.283
So, with that being said, typical fixture things is this First and foremost, we'll go right to the curveball.

00:04:59.283 --> 00:05:06.024
You've got to move this fixture right, but what's going to end up happening when you move that fixture?

00:05:06.024 --> 00:05:14.442
You know that there's going to be a cut in the wall, and unless you end up having a giant scotch in the center of the room, which is not going to look good, it's going to look pretty gaudy.

00:05:14.555 --> 00:05:22.985
If you had a giant fixture there, you now need to paint that room, or you need to paint that spot, so your option above it could simply just be spot fixing.

00:05:22.985 --> 00:05:25.141
Okay, I'm going to spot fix that area.

00:05:25.141 --> 00:05:37.523
Above that, though and for someone else who may have OCD tendencies like myself, I would know the difference between someone who blended paint and a complete fresh coat of paint.

00:05:37.523 --> 00:05:42.221
So would it be wrong of us to say why not paint the entire ceiling?

00:05:42.221 --> 00:05:47.281
If we're going to paint one area, shouldn't we paint the whole ceiling for the customer's full satisfaction?

00:05:48.338 --> 00:05:49.422
Yeah, I'm with you, man, why not?

00:05:50.463 --> 00:05:50.887
Connected.

00:05:50.887 --> 00:06:06.903
On top of that, you can say well, if we're going to repaint this entire ceiling, would it not make sense to do things that maybe the customer would want long term, such as, okay, we can put in the recess lights over your kitchen table, since we're going to repaint that room anyway, might as well.

00:06:06.903 --> 00:06:11.185
Or let's address and cut in additional control points on the wall.

00:06:11.185 --> 00:06:14.603
Maybe they only had one single pole switch and a three-way could be beneficial.

00:06:14.603 --> 00:06:26.555
So as we scale further and further up, we have to imagine and say if I do this for this customer as a direct result, what would they have to do?

00:06:26.555 --> 00:06:32.504
And when you take what they'd have to do and you simply say why don't I do that for you?

00:06:32.504 --> 00:06:40.262
Now, it's not you pushing something, it's you simply thinking service-minded forward and saying how can I serve them?

00:06:40.262 --> 00:06:47.324
So all they'll have to do is write a check and sit back and relax and let service-oblectual take care of this for them.

00:06:48.360 --> 00:06:57.120
I love that you went there and service-minded forward again because that's the word that was coming into my head where some people are thinking well, if I offer anything else right now, that's salesy too.

00:06:57.120 --> 00:07:06.184
Like many electricians, go in there, go to move that six inches and then whip out a 10-point inspection and try to go through the whole house now.

00:07:06.937 --> 00:07:08.548
And now it actually looks salesy.

00:07:08.548 --> 00:07:18.341
You're going about it that way Because in one light you follow our process, you get to the panel, you see the infrastructure, you get to the room and you can design anything around that.

00:07:18.341 --> 00:07:33.367
But if I was a customer and someone looked at a light fixture and just kind of stood there staring at it and goes hey, by the way, while I'm here, you want me to look into a 10-point safety inspection, my first thought is they didn't find enough to justify more than $200.

00:07:33.367 --> 00:07:38.961
I'm like nah, you know what, just tell me what this is and then later we can always add an inspection if you need.

00:07:39.723 --> 00:07:45.442
Yep, on an earlier podcast you said something I thought was brilliant, joe, and I think it fits here too.

00:07:45.442 --> 00:07:53.463
It's not just like, okay, what gap is left after I do this technical side of the work, and I agree with everything you said.

00:07:53.463 --> 00:08:01.846
But I believe at one point correct me if I'm getting this wrong in any way you said never do the thing without understanding why you're doing the thing Exactly.

00:08:02.555 --> 00:08:17.406
Yes, that is a very big concept that we have to apply here, and the reason why we do that is because when you have your because frame, it not only helps you handle your objections, but it then directly links it to where the customer asks and says why would you do that?

00:08:17.406 --> 00:08:21.555
Imagine if someone were to say, well, why would you paint my whole ceiling?

00:08:21.555 --> 00:08:23.798
And you just did there and just completely glass.

00:08:23.798 --> 00:08:29.591
Eyed them like, well, hmm, like I wouldn't have anything.

00:08:29.591 --> 00:08:30.934
I'd be pretty, I'd be kind of sold.

00:08:30.934 --> 00:08:32.618
Yeah, no, I'm completely.

00:08:33.245 --> 00:08:41.804
But when you're saying that's a great question and I'm glad you asked here at service electrical, we want to make it so you have to do nothing whatsoever other than the right to check.

00:08:41.804 --> 00:08:54.585
We would like to handle everything for you and I figured since I know you mentioned very meticulously that you like to take care of the home I didn't want to just have a spot paint on this brand new ceiling, so we figured we'd do the entire thing so you can have complete peace of mind.

00:08:54.585 --> 00:08:56.590
No, it's a perfect finished product.

00:08:56.590 --> 00:09:00.018
You'll never have to come back to it as the colors change over time.

00:09:00.018 --> 00:09:02.955
Is it wrong to me to want to ensure that that gets done for you?

00:09:02.955 --> 00:09:02.995
I?

00:09:05.668 --> 00:09:06.472
Don't think so, man.

00:09:06.472 --> 00:09:08.085
I can't see it being wrong.

00:09:08.085 --> 00:09:29.321
I mean, the reality is and I think we've touched on this a time or two before but the reality is even the person, the homeowner that is with intent to take care of that themselves, mm-hmm, is likely not to do it, and if they even were going to do it, it's likely not to happen for weeks to months to sometimes years.

00:09:29.321 --> 00:09:30.524
Projects like that go on.

00:09:30.686 --> 00:09:42.869
Please jump back in that was an exact situation that I had in my own life, where what I completely renovated my basement like we had just an empty space, and I built the gym and framed it and wired it and all this stuff.

00:09:42.869 --> 00:09:45.985
I had my intention to say I'm gonna floor, I'm gonna paint.

00:09:45.985 --> 00:09:52.298
But after I finished the spackling I had no one had nothing to do with this, this room.

00:09:52.298 --> 00:09:52.778
After that.

00:09:52.778 --> 00:09:56.573
So literally while I was having my floor, came in.

00:09:56.573 --> 00:09:58.057
He was like you know what?

00:09:58.057 --> 00:10:03.364
We could also spackle this if you get through the sanding and get this painted so you don't have to anymore.

00:10:03.364 --> 00:10:04.967
And I was sold.

00:10:04.988 --> 00:10:09.585
I was like I already wanted to put it on someone else, so you're gonna offer it while you're doing the flowing, off course.

00:10:09.585 --> 00:10:10.447
Well, it makes sense.

00:10:10.447 --> 00:10:12.091
You can't put it in the floor, you just not painted.

00:10:12.091 --> 00:10:13.214
You should do it.

00:10:13.214 --> 00:10:15.359
And I was grateful.

00:10:15.359 --> 00:10:24.445
I was grateful that he offered it because then I didn't have to ask and I would have never even thought to have asked because it was already in my mind.

00:10:24.445 --> 00:10:30.607
So not only did he remove something that was on my plate, but closed an open cycle and I just have to pay for it.

00:10:31.695 --> 00:10:32.616
Yeah, man, I love it.

00:10:32.616 --> 00:10:33.960
Back on up.

00:10:33.960 --> 00:10:37.827
Let's give this a little situational analysis.

00:10:37.827 --> 00:10:46.116
So electrician A offers to take care of that whole do the paint, and is able to do that for them and save them that time.

00:10:46.116 --> 00:10:48.861
Electrician B does not offer that.

00:10:48.861 --> 00:10:54.139
Let's say that homeowner had full intent of not doing it themselves.

00:10:54.139 --> 00:11:01.038
Now look at the extra time and energy they've got to put in to now organize another contractor.

00:11:01.038 --> 00:11:03.102
Look through yet another price.

00:11:03.683 --> 00:11:05.648
Deal with yet another relationship.

00:11:05.648 --> 00:11:16.164
In fact, even if they just you know what they chose electrician A, let's take B off the table and then at a future date, A wasn't available for some reason, or?

00:11:16.164 --> 00:11:21.924
They decided to call someone else for a similar scenario and the electrician doesn't offer to paint it.

00:11:21.924 --> 00:11:23.148
What are they thinking?

00:11:24.475 --> 00:11:24.817
In mall.

00:11:24.817 --> 00:11:28.676
Honestly, they're probably thinking that it's just another problem that they have to deal with.

00:11:28.676 --> 00:11:43.259
And that actually came up specifically as well this morning where the previous customer was saying well, I was just planning on buying a great big scutcheon and just putting it and that's going to cover the whole the six inches gap.

00:11:43.259 --> 00:11:51.626
And the thing was, is that, even if they did that, not even counting the fact that they have a six inch gap, probably not conversion breathing through?

00:11:51.626 --> 00:11:56.907
But then you could also offer and say well, why not put matching of scutcheons on the whole floor?

00:11:56.907 --> 00:12:07.118
Wouldn't it benefit to say I'll do it for the kitchen fixture, I'll do it for the dining room chandelier, the whole floor now have matching fixtures, just like you'd have crown molding in one room, wouldn't you have it in another?

00:12:07.118 --> 00:12:16.863
So even if that was the case, you can think one step further and that customer would not blame you for it.

00:12:16.863 --> 00:12:19.128
If anything, they'd thank you.

00:12:20.535 --> 00:12:21.759
I love it, man, as you know.

00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:22.320
I love it.

00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:23.663
I'm a huge advocate of it.

00:12:23.663 --> 00:12:25.147
I'm your partner in this thing.

00:12:25.147 --> 00:12:27.825
Let's create an option, friendly mindset.

00:12:27.825 --> 00:12:32.080
If you're listening to this right now, if you're engaging with us, live in the Facebook group.

00:12:32.080 --> 00:12:34.647
Let me challenge you for just a moment.

00:12:34.647 --> 00:12:37.418
Are you creating an option, friendly mindset?

00:12:37.418 --> 00:12:47.892
Are you first seeking to understand why, before you ever take care of these tasks or someone, and are you picking up on these areas or we leave in a gap when we're done?

00:12:47.892 --> 00:12:56.477
I mean, think about, can I take a picture of this great installation or repair when I'm done and if you've still got a hole in the ceiling?

00:12:56.477 --> 00:12:58.162
In this case, could you?

00:12:58.162 --> 00:13:01.448
And the answer is a resounding no, right.

00:13:02.134 --> 00:13:03.725
So, you can do this too.

00:13:03.725 --> 00:13:05.035
The question is, are you?

00:13:05.035 --> 00:13:09.062
And then the next question is what would happen to your business if you did?

00:13:09.062 --> 00:13:19.778
What would happen to your relationships if you did, if you could truly present these options in a non-threatening, simple to understand verbal format so people could just make the choice?

00:13:19.778 --> 00:13:22.789
What would happen to your business then, joe?

00:13:22.789 --> 00:13:23.894
What do we got for an action item?

00:13:23.894 --> 00:13:25.177
Before we wrap this up, brother?

00:13:25.778 --> 00:13:30.236
So I would say, as an action item, the first thing we want to do is a mindset shift.

00:13:30.236 --> 00:13:36.876
Go figure for the episode, yeah, but the thought would be okay if I was going to leave this job.

00:13:36.876 --> 00:13:40.903
Well, what do I suspect is the next thing the client will have to do?

00:13:40.903 --> 00:13:45.432
It doesn't mean that you're offering options In this basic exercise.

00:13:45.432 --> 00:13:55.287
It simply means, after I've done the job I'm already doing maybe it's a previous job, you quoted previous options you're there and say, all right, I'm done with this.

00:13:55.287 --> 00:13:57.774
Now, what will they now have to do?

00:13:57.774 --> 00:14:00.152
What can I at least suspect they'll have to do?

00:14:00.152 --> 00:14:04.916
Then you take that knowledge and you add that to future options.

00:14:04.916 --> 00:14:06.850
You could use the language of.

00:14:06.850 --> 00:14:15.548
We've worked on a project of this, similar before, and because of that, we've seen that the customer often has to pick up this, this and this Because of that.

00:14:15.548 --> 00:14:21.975
That's why I'm offering you these choices, so you can have complete peace of mind as well as be able to delegate it elsewhere.

00:14:21.975 --> 00:14:24.091
Would it be wrong to me to want to serve you in this way?

00:14:26.548 --> 00:14:28.052
Absolutely not, and I love that.

00:14:28.052 --> 00:14:31.105
I'm just going to go a step up and go now.

00:14:31.105 --> 00:14:38.994
Imagine you were an environment that influenced your mindset to be this way, five days week in classes that are an hour to 90 minutes.

00:14:38.994 --> 00:14:41.730
That's how our clients are seeing great success.

00:14:41.730 --> 00:14:45.068
Beyond the podcast, they're mass consuming this.

00:14:45.068 --> 00:15:01.636
